EU Court Advisor Sides Against Google in Android Antitrust Case
Alphabet's Google faces a significant legal setback in the European Union as an advisor to the bloc's highest court recommended dismissing the tech giant's appeal against a 2018 antitrust ruling. Advocate-General Juliane Kokott of the Court of Justice of the European Union stated Google's arguments were "ineffective" in challenging the 4.125 billion euro fine for allegedly using Android's dominance to stifle competition.
The case centers on claims that Google pressured smartphone manufacturers to pre-install its search engine, Chrome browser, and Play Store—practices the EU says unfairly Leveraged Android's 73% global market share. While the advisor's opinion isn't binding, it signals probable defeat for Google when judges rule later this year.
